Located at the College end (or West end) of Duke of Gloucester Street, Merchants Square has over 40 shops and places to dine. Restaurants range from the more expensive such as the Fat Canary to more affordable take out such as the Cheese Shop. Don’t be fooled by a sign reading The Cheese Shop. Yes, they do sell cheese, but they also make the best sandwiches with their proprietory dressing.
Once you’re done with lunch or dinner, you’ll want something to satisfy your sweet tooth. Wythe Candy is located next to the Cheese Shop and is a chocolate lover’s paradise. Load up on fudge and chocolate covered strawberries. Stroll through Colonial Williamsburg and work off the calories.
Another healthier choice is the Peanut Shop. They have loads of free samples to help you decide what you would like to purchase. When offered a sample, just say ” yes”.
With the holiday season here, Merchants Square comes to life with decorations, activities, and lights. Shop for a special Christmas toy at The Toymaker or an authentic Colonial Williamsburg Christmas ornament from the Craft House. Plus there are seasonal concerts and performances at Kimball Theater.
The quaintness of the brick sidewalks and architecture and the unique shops makes Merchants Square a shopping experience you will treasure.
