Secret Golf Course Deal: Deer Run in Newport News

The following comes fro an article in Golf Digest March/April 2003 entitled ‘Colonial Classics’ by M.J. Stott

“Just outside Yorktown, golfers will find two superb Ed Ault-designed courses, the Deer Run layout and the Cardinal course, both located at the Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run. Ault cleverly leveraged the beginning Piedmont elevation changes, mixings rolling fairways with surrounding forest. His skill is particularly apparent on the long, well-bunkered final five holes at Deer Run that some call the toughest finishing holes in the Old Dominion. While carts are mandatory at Deer Run, this is not the case at the Cardinal, which extends to 6,700 yards from the back tees. With a sloping fairway and water down the left side, the gorgeous par-5 17th hole is adjacent to a Civil War battlefield. Stray shots will give players a real sense of Virginia history.” “Must-Play Courses of the Middle Atlantic” says Washington Golf Monthly (March 2003)

“This Ed Ault layout is large and demanding, worthy of a professional event, for sure. Each hole is a challenge and none is a pushover. The back tee is not for the faint of driver. The course requires power and finesse. Known for its top notch conditioning and fine layout, Deer Run is truly one of the best municipals you’ll ever play. You’ll find nothing but true lies on its Bermuda grass fairways. All with a municipal price tag.”
